Quality Care Needs Quality Spaces
The other day, I got to reflecting on sensory rooms, which are commonly found in schools. These rooms are mainly implemented to serve those with special needs. They often feature projected lights and sounds, creating an environment of calm and helping students relax.
Soon, I began reflecting on the childcare sector and how great it would be if more programs had spaces that could support children with a wide range of needs. A 2016 study on the state of childcare in Alberta revealed that 19% of childcare organizations are unable to offer care for children with special needs, with some attributing this to a lack of qualified staff. If staff aren’t adequately trained, how can they care for children with diverse needs?
Another area worth exploring is environmental considerations. Childcare programs are often busy, with an average of eighty children in each program across Alberta. While these programs may work well for some, they are less ideal for children sensitive to noise or those who require more individualized attention.
At We Did It!, we believe that childcare should be inclusive for everyone, regardless of their ability. We maintain small staff-to-child ratios, ensuring all children receive the attention they deserve in a safe, nurturing environment. A stable environment allows us to adjust spaces based on the children’s needs and provide equipment that helps foster learning and personal growth.
